Salmon Defense is proud to announce the Billy Frank Jr. Salmon Forever Fund Scholarship, a need-based award honoring the legacy of Billy Frank Jr. and supporting the next generation of Tribal leaders. There will be a total of two $5,000 awards given to one male and one female.
This scholarship is designed to assist undergraduate and graduate students from federally recognized Tribes with interests in Washington State and who are committed to academic excellence, leadership, and the protection of Treaty rights and the natural world.
Scholarship Award
- $5,000 one-time award
- Funds may be used for tuition, fees, books, housing, transportation, and other education-related expenses
- Awards will be announced on March 9, 2026 (Billy Frank Jr. Day)
Eligibility Highlights
Applicants must:
- Be an enrolled member of a federally recognized Tribe with interests in Washington State, provide both proof of enrollment and Certificate Degree of Indian Blood
- Be a Junior, Senior, or Graduate/Master’s student at an accredited institution
- Maintain a minimum GPA of 3.3
- Be enrolled in at least 12 credits per academic term

A complete application includes:
- Completed scholarship application (Download application here)
- Proof of tribal enrollment (copies of Tribal ID and CDIB)
- Academic transcripts
- Letter of recommendation
- Current class schedule
- A 500–1000 word essay responding to application prompts
Application Deadline: February 6, 2026
Late or incomplete applications will not be considered.

Preference will be given to students who demonstrate:
- Strong academic performance
- Leadership experience
- Commitment to community service and Tribal values
