Honoring the Legacy of our Beloved Lorraine Loomis (1940-2021)
Salmon Defense is now accepting donations for the Lorraine Loomis Memorial Scholarship Fund on behalf of the Pacific Salmon Commission.
The new Pacific Salmon Commission Lorraine Loomis Memorial scholarship seeks to honor Lorraine’s legacy and her many contributions to the fisheries community, with a view to inspiring and enabling future leaders like her. A scholarship of USD$5000 will be awarded annually to a selected American or Canadian student enrolled in a post-secondary program in fisheries, or a related field, with preference given to female and Indigenous candidates. The United States National Marine Fisheries Service has generously provided initial funding for the inaugural scholarship, which will be awarded in 2024. If you are interested in applying, visit PSC’s Lorraine Loomis Memorial Scholarship application page.
The Billy Frank Jr. Salmon Forever Fund is honored to be designated as a source to receive donations in honor of John Hollowed Sr. (1957-2023)
Your contribution to Salmon Defense will work to both memorialize his work and sustain action to its meaning. The Salmon Forever Fund sustains the intention of that legacy by continuing his work and vision through communications, advocacy, education, and litigation. We can amplify his voice through our collective voices, working together to Save Salmon for Our Common Future. Today, that work is more urgent than ever before.
John worked as the legal advisor at the Northwest Indian Fisheries Commission where he served in various capacities for more than 35 years. In 2018, the U.S. Supreme Court affirmed a 9th Circuit Court of Appeals decision in United States v. Washington, known as the Culvert Case. This case was built on John’s vision and foundational research—and will lead to enduring environmental protections for generations to come.
Contribution to the Salmon Defense – John Hollowed Memorial Fund will be managed to expand the Billy Frank Jr. Salmon Forever Fund and support work and legal challenges in defense of the region’s salmon and the habitats they depend on. Salmon Defense is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit
John was a tireless warrior for tribal treaty rights he will be remembered. The establishment of the John Hollowed Memorial Fund will help to continue the work John dedicated his career to.
